DAN SABAU

Romania (B.1977). Dan Sabau is a painter living and working in Brooklyn, New York. He studied at the Cleveland Institute of Art where he received his BFA. During his studies Sabau participated in New York Independent Studio Program through Parsons School of Design. This was a crucial experience, giving him an idea of what it would be like as an artist living and working in Manhattan. He moved to New York City in 2002, a year after graduating from art school, to begin his career as an artist.

Sabau’s new works are fueled by his interests in abstract expressionism and surrealism. He is influenced by artists such as Paul Jenkins, Max Ernst, and Helen Frankenthaler. His technique to his recent alcohol ink based paintings is somewhat unorthodox and intuitive. As Sabau pours vibrant colors onto the surface, he manipulates the outcome by maneuvering and controlling the field, creating bleeding and pools of translucent color throughout the composition. This controlled application results in the combination of ultra-fine forms and washes evocative of rare creatures and phenomenons. The paintings have an alluring and striking presence that unveils a macro and micro-universe. Within this universe, the viewer is constantly discovering new images, within images, with every new glance. These works seem to change and morph, allowing the audience to be surprised and curious by what they see within the paintings.

Sabau’s work has been exhibited in national and international galleries and art fairs, including NADA Miami, Art Basel, Scope, Switzerland Basel, Art on Paper, and The Other Art Fair.
